I’ve always enjoyed writing, but it wasn’t until I was working in Fiji in the late 90s that I took the opportunity to follow my intuition and start writing for real.
I cut my teeth as a freelance writer by creating travel articles for the Air Pacific inflight magazine, and when the time came to leave Fiji, I was fortunate enough to be accepted into Massey University's Graduate Diploma in Journalism, based in Wellington, New Zealand.
After graduating from this one-year course, I worked as a multi-media reporter for several newspapers in the Wellington area. As a fully trained photographer, my skills were in demand as I provided the whole package—words and images.
Fifteen years ago, I moved to Hawke’s Bay to join Hawke’s Bay Today as a feature writer in the commercial department. I especially enjoy writing rural and lifestyle features, although my writing experience spans a huge range of subjects.
I’m a thorough interviewer and genuinely enjoy meeting and writing about people. Most interviews are conducted by phone, but there’s nothing I enjoy more than hitting the road and visiting people in their own surroundings. One particular favorite is interviewing the Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year.
I’m planning to transition from full-time work to freelance writing, and this is the first step towards that goal.
In addition to my writing skills, I am a genealogist, which has helped me hone my research skills. I pride myself on being a critical thinker, honest, independent, trustworthy, realistic, practical, and a good listener. I also have a quirky sense of humor.
